Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Helwan is an Egyptian-made copy of the Beretta Modello 1951 that was produced by Al Maadi. It is a 9mm semi-automatic military pistol that uses a single stack spurred magazine capable of holding eight rounds. The pistol employs a cross bolt safety and has a magazine release located in the lower right corner of the grip. The Model 951 was initially contracted by the Egyptian Army for 50,000 units with some modifications including a replacement of the magazine release with a simpler external coiled metal spring release at the base of the grip. This modification led to the production of the Helwan clone, which was based on the original Beretta design and produced by Maadi in the 1970s.
The original Beretta pistol was adopted by the Italian Navy, but not the Army, until it was replaced by the Beretta 92 in the mid-1970s. The M1951 has an open top slide and uses a short recoil-operation with a breech locking mechanism derived from the Walther P38, much like earlier Beretta pistols such as the Beretta M1935. These pistols were widely licensed to several Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt and Iraq. During the Arab-Israeli conflicts of the 1960s and 70s, pistols that were in Egyptian use found their way into Israeli arsenals when large quantities were captured. The Helwan was widely imported into the US by companies such as Interarms and has since become a popular surplus pistol.
