Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Walther PP (Polizeipistole, or police pistol) series are blowback-operated semi-automatic pistols developed by the German arms manufacturer Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen. They feature an exposed hammer, a traditional double-action trigger mechanism, a single-column magazine, and a fixed barrel that also serves as the guide rod for the recoil spring. The series includes the Walther PP, PPK, PPK/S, and PPK/E models. Additionally, the Walther TPH, a smaller caliber pocket pistol, was introduced in 1971 and shares similar handling and operation with the PPK. The Walther PP series has been manufactured in multiple countries, including Germany, France, and the United States. The PPK version has been produced not only by Walther in Germany but also under license by several companies: Manurhin in France, Interarms in Virginia, and Smith & Wesson in Maine. Since 2018, the PPK and PPK/S models have been built at Walther Arms, Inc., the company's US-based subsidiary in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

The PP and PPK were among the first successful double-action semi-automatic pistols and remain in production today. They have influenced many other pistol designs, including the Soviet Makarov, the Hungarian FEG PA-63, the Polish P-64, the American Accu-Tek AT-380 II, and the Argentinian Bersa Thunder 380. Both models were popular with European police and civilians due to their reliability and concealability. During World War II, the PP and PPK were issued to German military officers, including those in the Luftwaffe, as well as to members of the Ordnungspolizei (uniformed police) and the Kriminalpolizei (plainclothes detectives). Walther's original factory was located in Zella-Mehlis in the state of Thuringia.

After World War II, when this area came under Soviet control, Walther moved operations to West Germany, establishing a new factory in Ulm. Due to post-war restrictions, the Allies forbade the manufacture of weapons in Germany. As a result, in 1952, Walther licensed production of the PP series to Manufacture de Machines du Haut-Rhin (Manurhin) in France. Manurhin continued manufacturing the PP series until 1986.
