Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this pioneering hammer-fired, solid steel, pump-action shotgun for a penny-start auction; this is the Marlin Model 1898.
The Marlin Model 1898 was the company’s first venture into the pump-action shotgun market, marking a major step forward from its earlier lever- and single-shot designs. Introduced with a strong steel receiver—robust for its era—the Model 1898 demonstrated Marlin’s intent to compete directly with the growing popularity of repeating shotguns. While later overshadowed by more refined designs, the 1898 remains an important early milestone in Marlin’s shotgun development and a notable example of turn-of-the-century American firearm engineering.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Model 1898 is a pump-action shotgun produced from 1898 to 1905, representing one of Marlin’s early efforts to compete in the rapidly growing repeating-shotgun market of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Based on the John M. Browning–influenced patents used by Marlin at the time, the Model 1898 featured a sliding-action design with an external hammer, a tubular magazine, and a robust steel receiver. It was chambered primarily in 12 gauge and built in several grades, ranging from plain utility versions to more refined sporting configurations. Although innovative for its era, the shotgun’s complex internal system and its early-generation pump design placed it in direct competition with stronger, more modern mechanisms eventually introduced by Winchester and others.

Produced for only a few years before Marlin replaced it with improved designs, the Model 1898 is now remembered as a transitional firearm that helped shape the development of Marlin’s later repeating shotguns. Collectors today view it with interest for its historical significance and craftsmanship, though it is widely regarded as a firearm that should not be fired due to safety concerns tied to its early action design and age. As a result, surviving examples are typically valued as display pieces or curios of American shotgun evolution. Despite its relatively short production span, the Marlin Model 1898 remains an important milestone in Marlin’s early move toward repeating-action sporting arms.
