Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this lever-action rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Marlin Model 39.
The Marlin Model 39, produced from 1922 to 1938, is a highly regarded lever-action .22 rimfire known for its reliability, balance, and craftsmanship. Early examples—particularly those without a serial prefix or with an “S” prefix—are prized for their superior finish and fine workmanship. Because most were heavily used in the field and the receiver typically showed wear first, excellent original-condition specimens are extremely rare, making them highly sought after by collectors today.

Manufactured from approximately 1922 to 1938, with an estimated production of 40,000 to 50,000 rifles, this early Model 39 predates the later 39A and is distinguished by its refined materials and traditional styling. Chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle cartridges, the rifle features a 24-inch octagon barrel with an under-barrel tubular magazine, providing excellent balance and consistent handling. The takedown design allowed the rifle to be separated easily for transport and maintenance, a desirable feature for sportsmen of the era.

From a construction and aesthetic standpoint, the Model 39 displays a level of finish uncommon in later mass-produced rimfires. The receiver and lever were case hardened, while the barrel, magazine tube, forend tip, bolt, hammer, and screws were richly blued, creating a striking contrast of finishes. Open iron sights were standard, and the rifle was fitted with an S-shaped pistol grip stock made from walnut, offered in graded qualities designated X, 2X, or 3X depending on figure and finish. A hard rubber buttplate completed the package, reinforcing its period-correct appearance. Today, the early Marlin Model 39 is highly regarded by collectors and shooters alike as an exceptional example of early 20th-century American rimfire design, valued for its mechanical excellence, elegant presentation, and historical significance.
