Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Model 56, part of the company’s innovative but short-lived “Levermatic” series, represented a bold reimagining of the traditional lever-action platform. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle with a 24-inch blued barrel, it incorporated a unique short-throw lever system that allowed exceptionally fast and smooth cycling with minimal shooter movement—an advantage for maintaining accuracy during rapid follow-up shots. This mechanism, derived from a cam-and-roller design licensed from the Italian firm S.L. Breda, gave the Model 56 a level of mechanical refinement uncommon in rimfire lever guns of its era. Equipped with a beaded blade ramp front sight, adjustable rear sight, and an added Weaver scope, the rifle offered versatile sighting options suited for both small-game hunting and recreational shooting. Its detachable box magazine, another departure from the typical tubular design, further enhanced the rifle’s practicality by simplifying reloads and making it more appealing to a broad range of shooters.

Aesthetically and structurally, the Model 56 also broke from Marlin’s traditional patterns. The use of an aluminum alloy receiver reduced weight and contributed to the rifle’s more modern profile, while the smooth walnut stock maintained a classic touch. Although the Levermatic system delivered excellent handling and accuracy, the Model 56 struggled to gain long-term commercial traction amid competition from pump-action and semi-automatic rimfire rifles. Nevertheless, its forward-thinking engineering and distinctive operating system have earned it a dedicated following among collectors and enthusiasts. Today, the Model 56 stands as a notable example of mid-20th-century experimentation in American firearms design—valued for its smooth action, unique mechanical character, and its place in Marlin’s legacy of innovation.
