Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Marlin Levermatic is a series of lever-action rifles that were manufactured by Marlin Firearms in the year 1955. Unlike traditional lever-action rifles like the Marlin 39A, the Levermatic uses a unique cam-and-roller system that allows for an exceptionally smooth and short lever motion when reloading a new cartridge. The cam-and-roller system was initially invented by Kessler Arms Company for their "Lever-Matic" shotgun. After Kessler's dissolution, Marlin licensed the idea and began producing rifles using a similar design. The Marlin Model 56 was produced between 1955 and 1964, although there are no records to provide a more precise date. As long guns were not required to have serial numbers before the 1968 Gun Control Act, which took effect on January 1, 1969, this firearm may not have a serial or production number. As a result, many manufacturers did not give serial numbers to their economy line of products.

As a result, many manufacturers did not give serial numbers to their economy line of products.
There are several ways to date the initial production of the Model 56, according to various internet sources and firearms forums. In early 1955, the rifle had a steel receiver, 24" barrel, and low serial numbers. Later that year, the steel receiver was replaced with an aluminum one, and the barrel was shortened to 22" and no longer had serial numbers. This configuration was used until the end of production. One of the key factors contributing to the Model 56's accuracy was its patented Marlin Microgroove Barrel. This type of rifling was different from traditional rifled barrels and was a major breakthrough at the time. This rifling design allowed the rifle to produce 1" groups at 100 yards, or even less, which is known as sub-minute of angle grouping. This was an outstanding achievement in the 1950s, particularly for the .22 Long Rifle rimfire cartridge.
The rifle's one-piece stock with the rifle action bedded also contributed to its accuracy. Today, achieving sub-minute angle grouping is more commonplace thanks to advancements in metallurgy and machining technology. The Levermatic system was utilized in several rifle models, including Marlin 56 with a 22 LR, 7, 10, 12 round box magazine from 1955 to 1964, Sears 46c (Marlin 56) with a 22 Long Rifle and 7 round box magazine in 1956, Marlin 57 with a tubular magazine and 22 LR from 1959 to 1965, J.C. Higgins 44 DL (Marlin 57) with a tubular magazine and 22 Long Rifle, Western Auto Revelation model 115 (Marlin 57) with a tubular magazine and 22 Long Rifle, Marlin 57M with a tubular magazine and 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire from 1959 to 1969, J.C. Higgins 44 DLM (Marlin 57m) with a tubular magazine and 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, and Marlin 62 with a 4 round box magazine for .256 Winchester Magnum and .30 Carbine from 1963 to 1969.
The Model 57 is the specific example being referred to. The Model 57 rifles had initially featured curved aluminum receivers, but in 1960, Marlin reverted back to the squared steel receivers for the Levermatic rifles. The tubular magazine versions of the Levermatic were more popular than the original box magazine version. Between 1959 and 1965, a total of 34,628 Model 57s were produced.
