The MAS 45 bolt-action rifle was manufactured by Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne (MAS), a French state-owned arms factory. Interestingly, the MAS 45 has German origins. It was originally designed as the Mauser KKW (Kleinkaliber-Wehrsportgewehr), a .22 LR training rifle used by the German military before and during World War II. After the war, the French took over the Mauser factory in Oberndorf and continued production of the design, which became the MAS 45. It was later produced at the MAS factory in Saint-Étienne and adopted by the French military primarily as a training rifle for marksmanship instruction.
