The design was officially released in 1965 and licensed to Mauser for production in 1966. The 1966 production serial numbers began with the prefix 'G' . The smoothness of the action and the quality of manufacture have become legendary among professional shooters. The "Original Mauser" was only produced for a few years and was discontinued in circa 1970, which is why they have also become a prize procession among collectors. The Model 66 action is the basis for many sniper rifles used by the U.S. Military and other countries to this day. Another innovative design feature of the Mauser 66 is the safety system - The safety catch is mounted on the rear of the bolt assembly and blocks the firing pin in addition to locking the bolt closed, the safety is pulled back to engage; once engaged the bolt is locked shut and the rifle cannot fire, to disengage there is a tab button on the top of the safety button, this tab must be pushed down and then the safety pushed forward, the button acts as a safety lock and is easy to operate as well as silent in operation.
