Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mauser Modelo Argentino M1891 is one of the most historically significant and aesthetically admired bolt-action military rifles of the late 19th century, representing Argentina’s effort to modernize its armed forces with one of the most advanced infantry arms of the time. Adopted by the Argentine military in 1891, this rifle was based on an evolved form of the earlier Mauser repeating rifle designs and was produced in large numbers for Argentina’s Army and auxiliary troops, with approximately 180,000 rifles and 30,000 carbines contracted from German manufacturers such as Ludwig Loewe & Company and, after 1896, Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) in Berlin. The model was chambered in the 7.65×53?mm Argentine Mauser cartridge, a rimless, bottlenecked round designed for smokeless powder that offered excellent ballistic performance for its era and contributed to the rifle’s reputation for accuracy and effective range. Mechanically, the M1891 featured a strong, front-locking dual lug bolt, a five-round internal single-stack magazine loaded via stripper clips—a relatively modern feature at the time that sped up reloading compared to earlier designs—and a distinctive Mauser wing safety on the bolt shroud that protected against accidental discharge. The rifle’s external design included a full-length wooden stock with a wire-secured wood handguard, fixed sights graduated for extended distances, and elegant receiver markings including the Argentine national crest, giving it both functional and aesthetic appeal.

Variants included the full-length infantry rifle with a straight bolt handle and longer sight radius, as well as shorter cavalry and engineer carbines with turned-down bolt handles and reduced barrel lengths, all sharing the same core action and magazine system. The M1891 remained in Argentine service in various roles well into the 20th century and was even used by other South American nations, making it not only a cornerstone of Argentina’s military modernization but also a noteworthy example of early Mauser export success; today it is prized by collectors and military historians for its quality engineering, historical importance, and handsome, classic lines.
