Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The MAS-45 (often called the Mauser/MAS Model 45) is a purpose-designed .22 Long Rifle trainer that traces its origins to a Mauser training design which was later completed and produced at France’s Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Étienne (MAS). Developed in the immediate post-World-II period as European armies sought durable, low-cost trainers to conserve service ammunition, the rifle blends Mauser-style bolt-action geometry with features optimized for marksmanship instruction: a heavy, well-supported barrel, a robust bolt with a rear "flag" safety, and a detachable five-round magazine that speeds reload drills compared with tube-fed designs. Early tooling and parts originated with Mauser, but production shifted to Saint-Étienne, where roughly tens of thousands of rifles were finished for French military and cadet use; the MAS-45 subsequently served as France’s standard .22 training rifle into the 1960s and 1970s. On the range, the MAS-45 is appreciated for its military-grade feel and practical accuracy as a trainer. The long sight radius, adjustable aperture rear sight, and ramped blade front give a clear, repeatable sight picture well suited to marksmanship lessons, while the stout barrel and solid bedding deliver consistent shot placement with quality .22 ammunition. The action’s sealed bolt and parkerized finish make it more weather-resistant and serviceable than many civilian rimfires, and its full-length stock (typically beech or similar hardwood with a straight, service cheek) and roughly eight-pound weight give it the balance of a true small-bore service rifle rather than a pocket .22. For collectors and practical shooters today the MAS-45 remains an attractive piece: it represents a neat historical intersection of German design and French arsenal production, it provides reliable training-range performance, and surviving examples are common enough that decent specimens can still be found on the used market.
