Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Karabiner 98 kurz is a bolt-action rifle that uses the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge. It was adopted as the standard service rifle by the German Wehrmacht on June 21, 1935. The rifle is commonly abbreviated as Karabiner 98k or Kar98k, and is often mistakenly referred to as a K98, which is actually a Polish carbine and a copy of the Kar98a. The Karabiner 98k was one of the final developments in the long line of Mauser military rifles.
During World War II, the Karabiner 98k was supplemented by semi-automatic and fully automatic rifles, but it remained the primary German service rifle until the end of the war in 1945. Following the conclusion of World War II, millions of Karabiner 98k rifles were captured by the Soviets and widely distributed as military aid. As a result, the rifle continues to appear in conflicts across the world as they are taken out of storage during times of strife.
Mauser Oberndorf fell in the hands of the French in early 1945. The French resumed production of K98k's, P08's, P38's and 22lr trainers to wait for the French arsenals to resume production of MAS-36 and MAS-38 (semi-auto rifles now MAS-44) as a new war was going to happen in French Indochina.
However, Staline didn't see with a kind eye that the French were using German labor and factories to produce armement. In 1947, he threatened the French to take this matter in his own hands and destroy Oberndorf facilities. French evacuated in extreme hurry (day and night) to salvage whatever could be salvaged before an inevitable destruction. Between 1945 and 1947, France uses the Oberndorf facilities to retrofit any existing K98k's to get close to French MAS36 handling : with a stacking rod set in the cleaning rod hole of late-war stocks and provision for the French lateral sling.
