Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction; this is the Mauser P08 Luger!

This Mauser Luger pistol was manufactured in 1935, during the period just before Germany began openly defying the Versailles Treaty. Prior to that, rearmament had been carried out in secret, in direct violation of the treaty’s restrictions. To conceal both the maker and the year of production, coded markings were used, with “S/42” identifying the manufacturer and “G” representing the production year.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Luger, officially designated as the Pistole Parabellum or P-08, stands as one of the most iconic and recognizable service pistols of the 20th century. Praised for both its aesthetics and ergonomics, it was also regarded as a strong, accurate, and reliable sidearm. Developed by Georg Luger in 1898–1899 as an evolution of the Borchardt pistol, it refined the toggle-lock action concept originally pioneered by Sir Hiram Maxim. The Luger gained widespread recognition during World War I, where it proved itself in combat and earned a reputation that carried into World War II. Despite the adoption of the Walther P38 as Germany’s new service pistol, the Luger remained in production and use, a testament to its enduring effectiveness and appeal. The majority of Lugers were produced by DWM, which transitioned into Mauser in 1930, ensuring continued production into the Na-zi era.

This particular example is a Mauser-produced Luger from 1935, a historically significant year when Germany was still outwardly bound by the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty. During this period of secret rearmament, coded markings were used to disguise both manufacturer and production date, with “S/42” identifying Mauser and “G” denoting the year. These markings highlight the clandestine nature of German rearmament leading into World War II. Beyond its technical and mechanical appeal, this pistol represents a tangible connection to a pivotal moment in global history. For collectors of Lugers or enthusiasts of World War II small arms, a 1935 G-code Mauser Luger is not only a fine firearm but also an artifact of the era’s political and military transformation.
