Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Meriden Long Tom single-shot shotgun is a notable example of early 20th-century American firearm manufacturing. Produced by the Meriden Fire Arms Company between 1905 and 1918, this shotgun was designed as an affordable, utilitarian firearm for hunters and farmers. Manufactured in Meriden, Connecticut, the company was a subsidiary of Sears, Roebuck & Co., and the Long Tom was marketed through their catalog. The shotgun typically featured a 36-inch barrel (this specific example measures 39 ½"), which was longer than standard barrels of the time, earning it the "Long Tom" nickname. This extended barrel length was intended to provide greater accuracy and longer-range capabilities, making it suitable for various hunting applications.

The Long Tom's design was straightforward, emphasizing functionality over ornate features. It was a break-action, single-barrel shotgun, often chambered in 12 gauge, and was known for its simplicity and reliability. The Meriden Fire Arms Company produced these shotguns in large quantities, making them relatively common during their production years. However, due to the company's dissolution in 1918, the Long Tom has become a piece of history, representing an era of American craftsmanship and the evolution of hunting firearms. Today, surviving examples are considered collectible, especially those in good condition or with unique features.
