Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Many smallbore competitors with a sense of history acknowledge Mossberg's participation in and contribution to the game in the 20th century. Although Mossberg is no longer in that market today, many of its landmark precision rimfire rifles, including the war-born Model 144, are still in circulation.

The Model 144 .22 rimfire target rifle first appeared in the 1950 catalog of O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. It was based on the Model 44US, a rifle used by American military recruits for marksmanship training during World War II. Mossberg designed the Model 44US for the War Department, which required a dedicated training rifle for the 16 million Americans who ultimately served in WWII. Most of the servicemen and women learned to shoot, and many of them learned or demonstrated marksmanship in basic training using a Mossberg rifle.

Mossberg delivered nearly 58,000 Model 44US rifles to the armed forces in 1943-44. After the war, Mossberg's highly accurate Model 44US became a popular target rifle. The company sold many surplus rifles, designated Model 44US(a), and went on to introduce the Model 44US(b), (c), and (d) versions, each with minor modifications. Mossberg's target rifles were popular due to their lower prices compared to Winchester and Remington. The NRA Smallbore competitors in the 1950s likely outnumbered other rifle disciplines, contributing to the popularity of Mossberg's rifles. Although the Model 44US was originally a training rifle, Mossberg introduced an improved version designed for competition, the Model 144.

The Model 144 competition features a 26-inch, heavy, "semi-free floating" barrel with a 13/16-inch diameter, an adjustable trigger, target stock with cheek rest, beavertail fore-end, and adjustable hand stop. It also includes Mossberg's ½-minute click adjustable rear aperture sight and front ramp sight. In 1954, Mossberg upgraded the rifle with Lyman's 17A front sight and a Lyman competition rear sight made specifically for Mossberg, the 57MS, and named the new gun the Model 144LS (for Lyman Sights). By 1960, the Model 144LS was also equipped with white line spacers and Mossberg's "AC-KRO-GRUV" rifled barrels.

The 1960 model, designated as 144LSA, replaced the steel 57MS rear sight with Mossberg’s S331 alloy sight. In the mid-1970s, the Model 144LSB added an inch to the barrel length, resulting in a 27-inch, 15/16-inch diameter tube, and extended the stock by an inch, increasing the weight by about half a pound. Mossberg ceased production of the .22 precision rifles in 1985, although the company continues to manufacture plinker and hunter models today, marking the end of the Model 144 series.
