Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 144 .22 rimfire target rifle was born from its predecessor, the Model 44US, which was used by American military recruits for marksmanship training during WWII. Mossberg designed the Model 44US for the War Department and delivered nearly 58,000 rifles to the armed forces. After the war, the Model 44US became a popular target rifle. Mossberg improved upon the Model 44US and created the Model 144, a rifle better suited for competition. The Model 144 has several competition features such as a heavy, semi-free floating barrel, adjustable trigger, and target stock with a cheek rest. The rifle went through a few modifications, and Mossberg stopped producing the .22 precision rifle in 1985, which marked the end of the Model 144 series.
