After the second world war, many young men returned home with a familiarity and preference for bolt action rifles. The designers at Mossberg noticed this and began to produce bolt action shotguns for the veteran sportsmen. Simple, reliable, effective, and most importantly, priced correctly, these shotguns became a regular sight during the during the 1950's and '60's. The model 395K, with it's distinctive C-Lect choke was released in the late 1960's and continued production until 1988 when it was replaced by the 500's models, and then again by the 600's. Ultimately, the line was discontinued altogether in 2003, ending the nearly 70 year run of bolt-action shotguns.
