Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mossberg 42M is a finely made American rimfire rifle that reflects O.F. Mossberg & Sons’ strong reputation for producing accurate, affordable, and well-engineered sporting arms during the mid-20th century. Introduced in the 1930s and produced into the post-war years, the 42M is a bolt-action .22 caliber rifle chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle, offering shooters versatility across a wide range of ammunition. Unlike many single-shot training rifles of its era, the 42M uses a detachable box magazine, typically holding five rounds, which made it more appealing for hunting, field use, and informal target shooting. The rifle is built around a smooth, cock-on-open bolt with dual extractors, providing reliable feeding and positive ejection, while the crisp trigger contributes to its well-earned reputation for accuracy. Most examples feature a 23-inch barrel that delivers excellent balance and a long sight radius, paired with Mossberg’s adjustable rear peep sight—often the distinctive S-100 or S-130 aperture—which was highly regarded for precision shooting. The blued steel finish is classic and durable, complemented by a walnut stock with clean lines, a straight grip, and, on later variants, carefully checkered or grooved panels, giving the rifle a refined yet practical appearance. Lightweight, accurate, and mechanically straightforward, the Mossberg 42M became a favorite among small-game hunters, target shooters, and riflemen who appreciated traditional craftsmanship. Today, it remains respected as one of Mossberg’s standout bolt-action rimfires, valued by collectors and shooters for its reliability, elegant design, and enduring accuracy.
