The Mossberg Model 44US was developed during World War II as an economical .22 LR bolt-action training rifle for the U.S. military, with production running from early 1943 until late 1944 or early 1945 and approximately 58,000 rifles delivered under government contract. These military rifles, marked “U.S. Property,” were built with a plain birch stock, heavy 26-inch barrel, and simplified sights, providing an affordable yet accurate substitute for more expensive service trainers. After military production ceased, Mossberg transitioned the design to the civilian market with four commercial variants produced over a five-year span: the 44US(a), made 1944–1946, introduced an adjustable trigger pull and unique receiver, barrel, stock, and extractor designs; the 44US(b) followed from 1946–1947, featuring changes to the extractors; the 44US(c), manufactured 1947–1948, retained the previous changes and added a round-ended trigger guard along with an upgraded S-130 sight; and finally, model 44US(d), produced 1948–1949, incorporated a three-position sling-swivel plate and integrated hand-stop, and extended the receiver forward for a slightly longer profile. These civilian variants represent Mossberg’s incremental refinements to the original wartime trainer, culminating in the launch of the purpose-built Model 144LS (later 144US) target rifle in 1950.
