Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Mossberg has expanded its budget-friendly Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun series with two new Cruiser models featuring pistol grips instead of the traditional butt stocks straight from the factory. The updated lineup includes a 5+1 round 12 gauge version tested here with an 18.5” Cylinder bore barrel, a 7+1 round 12 gauge model with a 20” Cylinder bore barrel, and a 5+1 round 20 gauge variant equipped with an 18.5” Cylinder bore barrel. All of these options are attractively priced, making them a cost-effective choice for various shooting needs.

If you're unfamiliar with Mossberg's Maverick 88 series of shotguns, let's shed some light on what they offer. Designed to be affordable yet highly functional pump-action guns, these shotguns are known for their reliability and smooth operation. They feature dual extractors, twin-action bars, positive steel-to-steel lock-up, anti-jam elevators, and cross-bolt safeties positioned at the front of the trigger guard. The Maverick 88 Cruisers come with polymer trigger guards, corncob-style forends, and checkered pistol grips. They can be easily field stripped by removing a single pin and are fully compatible with all Mossberg 500 accessory stocks and barrels of the same gauge and capacity.

The metalwork of the Maverick 88 Cruiser models is semi-gloss blued, sporting a brass bead front sight with no rear sight. Unlike the Mossberg 500/590 series, the Maverick 88 lacks a drilled and tapped receiver top for optics mounts, reflecting its straightforward, no-frills design aimed at reliable defensive use. Another distinction is the cross-bolt safety located forward of the trigger guard, replacing the receiver-mounted safety switch found on the 500/590 series. While the receiver-mounted safety may be preferred for ease of use, the affordability of the Maverick 88 makes it a worthwhile compromise.

Renowned for their toughness, reliability, and affordability, Mossberg Maverick 88 shotguns are ideal for personal defense duties. The new Cruiser models offer exceptional maneuverability in close-quarters defensive situations, although the pistol grip design may not be as conducive to precise aiming with rifled slugs compared to other configurations. Both the 12-gauge and 20-gauge Maverick 88 Cruiser models feature 3-inch chambers, advantageous for the higher pellet count in 12-gauge 3-inch, .33-caliber 00 Buck loads, providing up to 15 pellets. In 20-gauge, smaller diameter #3 or #4 Buckshot is more common due to size constraints. This makes the 12-gauge model a compelling choice for those seeking maximum firepower in defensive scenarios.

While Cruiser-style shotguns with pistol grips excel in personal defense roles due to their lightweight and compact design, their primary purpose remains clear. When the situation demands the potent stopping power of a 12-gauge loaded with 3-inch 00 buckshot, these shotguns are unmatched. With sufficient practice and familiarity, they prove to be a formidable and effective choice for personal security needs.
