Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
During the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, the primary infantry weapon of the Imperial Japanese Army was the Type 38 rifle, officially adopted in 1905, the 38th year of the Meiji era. Chambered for the 6.5×50 mm Arisaka cartridge, the rifle was valued for its mild recoil and flat trajectory, though it was frequently criticized for lacking the stopping power of contemporary military cartridges. Nevertheless, the Type 38 earned a strong reputation for durability, reliability, and high manufacturing standards, and it remained in frontline service even after the introduction of the more powerful Type 99 rifle. In addition to the full-length infantry rifle, a shorter Type 38 carbine was issued to cavalry, engineers, artillery crews, and other personnel for whom a standard rifle was impractical.

Production of the Type 38 was extensive and distributed across several arsenals, including Tokyo, Kokura, Nagoya, and Jinsen, which together produced over 2.8 million rifles and several hundred thousand carbines from 1906 into the early 1940s. Following Japan’s consolidation of Manchuria, the Mukden Arsenal (also known as the Hoten Arsenal) became an important center of production. Between 1937 and 1944, Mukden manufactured approximately 148,800 rifles and, from 1938 to 1944, an additional 52,300 carbines—making it the last facility to continue Type 38 production before transitioning to the Type 99.

The Type 38 Rifles and carbines produced at the Mukden Arsenal can be identified by distinct arsenal markings and are often noted for their coarser machining and finish, a result of wartime manufacturing pressures. These arms equipped both Japanese garrison forces in northeast China and the Manchukuo Imperial Army, which relied heavily on Japanese-supplied weaponry. Today, Mukden-produced Type 38 rifles and carbines are comparatively scarce and are regarded by collectors as significant artifacts of Japan’s wartime arms industry beyond the Japanese home islands.
