Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Type 97 sniper rifle is a Japanese bolt-action rifle derived from the Type 38 infantry rifle. Developed in 1937, it reflects the common practice of adapting existing infantry weapons for specialized roles. The Type 97 differs from the original Type 38 mainly in its modifications for sniping: it features a lightened stock, a 2.5x magnification telescopic sight, and a mid-band setup for a monopod—though later models omitted the monopod. Its 6.5x50mm Arisaka cartridge, paired with a 794 millimeter (31.3 inch) barrel, minimizes flash and smoke, enhancing its effectiveness and making counter-sniping more challenging. The scope is offset to the left to allow for loading with stripper clips, and the rifle has a five-round box magazine that can be loaded either with a 5-round stripper clip or individual rounds. Production of the Type 97 took place at both the Nagoya Arsenal, which produced around 14,500 units, and the Kokura Arsenal, which made approximately 8,000 units.
