The Type 56 is a rifle that originated in China. It uses the 7.62×39mm ammunition and is a variant of the AK-47 and AKM rifles, which were designed by the Soviets. The Chinese military initially designated the Type 56 rifle as the "Type 1956 Submachine Gun" because it was initially used as an SMG rather than an infantry service rifle in the PLA. Production of the rifle started in 1956 at State Factory 66, but it was later handed over to Norinco and PolyTech, who now primarily manufacture the rifle for export.
The Type 56-I is a variant of the AKS, which features an under-folding steel shoulder stock and the bayonet removed to make it easier to carry. In the mid-1960s, the milled receivers were replaced by stamped receivers, which made the Type 56-1 equivalent to the Russian AKMS. It's important to note that civilian semi-auto versions (Type 56S-I) may have the spike bayonet added, but this is not the original military configuration. SILE Guns are very prevalent in the USA. They are all Norinco, and of good quality. These guns are usually made in State Factory /66\.
