Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Norinco, a prominent Chinese firearms manufacturer, took over producing the renowned Type 56 AKs and introduced several new models. Among these, the Norinco MAK 90 assault rifle stands out as the most well-known and widely used. The MAK 90 features both milled and stamped receivers, with two variations: angle cut and straight cut. It also offers multiple caliber options. In 1994, the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, imposed a ban on the manufacture, transfer, and possession of semiautomatic assault weapons. This legislation effectively prohibited the importation of Norinco AK models into the United States for civilian use, as they did not meet the sporting purposes test. The ban remained in place until September 2004. During this period, the NHM 91 model, a variant styled after the RPK with a 20-inch heavy barrel and a stamped receiver, gained popularity. After the ban, manufacturers adapted the MAK 90s to comply with U.S. regulations by modifying certain features. These post-ban MAK 90s, often referred to as Sporter rifles, can be legally owned, sold, and purchased in the U.S. if they adhere to relevant laws. These models typically feature non-threaded barrels, lack bayonet lugs, have thumbhole stocks instead of pistol grips, and generally do not include compensators. They also come with a smooth dust cover and a rectangular slot in the receiver, indicating milled construction.
