Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Norinco Model 213 is a Chinese-manufactured semi-automatic pistol developed as a commercial and export-oriented variant of the military-issue Type 54, itself a licensed adaptation of the Soviet TT-33 Tokarev. The original Type 54, chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev, was adopted by the People’s Liberation Army in the mid-1950s and remained in service for decades. In the early 1980s, Norinco—China North Industries Corporation—began producing export pistols based on the Tokarev design, modifying them to fire the more commercially viable 9mm cartridge. Designated as the Model 213, these pistols featured a frame-mounted manual safety to comply with Western import regulations, a feature not present on the original military models. Most examples retained the single-stack magazine and slim Tokarev grip profile, though some variants introduced widened frames to accept double-stack magazines, notably the 213A model. Early conversions used spacer blocks in the magazine well, while later versions were purpose-built for 9mm magazines.

Mechanically, the Model 213 maintains the short-recoil, locked-breech, single-action system inherited from the Tokarev, which was itself heavily influenced by John Browning’s FN 1903 and Colt 1911 designs. Built with solid steel construction, the Model 213 earned a reputation for ruggedness and reliability. Imported primarily during the 1980s and early 1990s, before trade restrictions ended further shipments, the Model 213 was widely sold as an affordable 9mm sidearm. Today, the Model 213 series is appreciated among firearms enthusiasts and collectors for its Cold War pedigree and utilitarian character.
