The Norinco Type 54 is a Chinese-made semi-automatic pistol based on the Soviet TT-33 Tokarev, adopted by the People’s Liberation Army in the early 1950s. Originally assembled with Soviet-supplied parts as the Type 51, it entered full domestic production around 1954 and was redesignated as the Type 54. Chambered primarily in 7.62x25mm Tokarev, the pistol features a short-recoil, locked-breech, single-action design with an eight-round single-stack magazine, fixed sights, and an all-steel construction. Its internal mechanics are influenced by John Browning’s designs, combining elements of the FN Model 1903 and the Colt 1911. The pistol gained a reputation for reliability and saw widespread use by Chinese military and police forces, as well as extensive export throughout Asia and Africa. A notable commercial export model is the Type 54-1, developed to meet U.S. import requirements during the 1980s and '90s.

This version adds a manual safety on the frame—lacking on the original military model—and is commonly chambered in 7.62x25mm, though 9mm versions (often labeled as Model 213) also exist. The Type 54-1 is easily recognized by its black grips marked with a five-pointed star, earning it the nickname “Black Star.” Though once considered inexpensive surplus, these pistols are now appreciated by collectors for their Cold War heritage, distinctive caliber, and rugged construction.
