Bryant Ridge Auction Company is pleased to present this antique bolt-action rifle for a penny-start auction. It is one of the Renowned Mauser 71/84 bolt-action rifles used in the Tom Cruise blockbuster movie The Last Samurai!
Navy Arms, the company that originally provided the complete stock of authentic antique Mauser 71/84 bolt action rifles for Tom Cruise's film “The Last Samurai,” has successfully reacquired these firearms from Mr. Rock Galotti, President of Motion Picture Weapons and the film's Weapons Coordinator. Now, Bryant Ridge Auction Company is excited to present a collection of these remarkable rifles for auction. Rock Galotti boasts an impressive filmography, having contributed to notable projects such as Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible 2,” Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables,” James Cameron’s “Avatar – The Way of Water,” and the "Matrix" series featuring Keanu Reeves, culminating in “John Wick 4.”
These movie-used rifles exhibit wear, dents, and scratches but are classified as “Grade 1” guns with no cracked stocks. All metal components are original, while the stocks are expertly crafted replicas explicitly designed for the film, complete with identical cartouches that mirror the originals. Each rifle comes with the original black leather sling used during filming and includes a certificate of authenticity signed by both Mr. Galotti and Navy Arms’ President, Val Forgett III. With quantities being extremely limited, this is a unique opportunity to own not only an original antique firearm but also a significant piece of cinematic history. Don’t miss out on adding this remarkable item to your collection!

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Originally adopted as the Gewehr 71, or Infanterie-Gewehr 71, this rifle marked the beginning of a distinguished line designed and manufactured by Paul and Wilhelm Mauser. The designation "I.G.Mod.71" was stamped on the rifles themselves. Paul Mauser developed his bolt-action design between 1866 and 1871, with extensive trials conducted during the 1870-71 period, where the Mauser rifle faced competition primarily from the M1869 Bavarian Werder. The Mauser was provisionally adopted on December 2, 1871, pending enhancements to its safety mechanism. With support from the Spandau arsenal, these improvements were finalized, and the rifle was formally accepted as the Infantry Rifle Model 1871 by the German Empire on February 14, 1872, excluding Bavaria.

The Gewehr 71's action diverged from its predecessor, the Dreyse needle gun, which had been utilized during the Franco-Prussian War and had exhibited several weaknesses. Notably, the Mauser "wing" type safety lever was introduced for the Gewehr 71, which featured a conventional bolt-action design chambered in 11mm for black powder cartridges. Its action utilized a single locking lug, locking forward of the receiver bridge, and was originally designed as a single-shot rifle.
In 1884, the design was updated to include an 8-round tubular magazine, developed by Alfred von Kropatschek, making it Germany's first repeating rifle and redesignated the Gewehr 1871/84. A variant of this repeater was adopted by the Ottoman Empire as the M1887, which featured a side-mounted cleaning rod, a second locking lug at the rear of the bolt, and was chambered in 9.5×60mmR—a cartridge that Paul Mauser claimed was highly efficient for black powder. In the early 20th century, some of these rifles were converted to the 7.65×53mm smokeless cartridge by the arsenal in Ankara, further showcasing the rifle's adaptability and significance in military history.
For decades, Navy Arms has been a prominent supplier of weapons for major motion pictures, television shows, and Broadway productions. Recently, they reacquired a small batch of original antique Mauser 71/84 rifles used in the film "The Last Samurai," starring Tom Cruise. These historically significant rifles are now available for sale, each accompanied by the leather sling utilized in the movie. Additionally, every purchase includes a certificate of authenticity signed by Val Forgett III, President & CEO of Navy Arms, and Robert ("Rock") Galotti, President of Motion Picture Weapons and the film's Weapons Coordinator. Mr. Galotti's extensive filmography includes notable titles such as "Mission Impossible 2," "The Expendables," "The Matrix: Resurrections," "Avatar: The Way of Water," and most recently, "John Wick: Chapter 4." This is a unique opportunity to own a piece of cinematic history.
