Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This is an excellent example of a Belgian Pieper "Bayard" Model 1908 Pocket Pistol. Although "Model 1908" became a standard name for this gun after the date the U.S. patent was issued, the Pieper company always referred to it as the Bayard Self-Loading Pistol or simply as the Bayard Pistol. After 1923, a newer model was introduced; it was called the "Old Model Bayard." Anciens Etablissements Pieper (A.E.P.) produced the Bayard pocket models in three calibers: 6.35, 7.65, and 9 mm. The first model produced was the Model of 1908, which was introduced in late 1909 or early 1910. The initial advertisement for this pistol appeared on April 1, 1910, in the Schuss and Waffe issue. The design was based on patents by B. Clarus from 1905 to 1907 and purchased by A.E.P. in 1907 or early 1908. This particular pistol is chambered in 7.65mm.
