Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The M1 carbine (formally the United States Carbine, Caliber .30, M1) is a lightweight semi-automatic carbine that was a standard firearm for the U.S. military during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The M1 carbine was produced in several variants and was widely used by paramilitary and police forces around the world, and also became a popular civilian firearm after World War II.
The Plainfield Machine Company was established by machinists William Haas and William Storck in New Jersey on February 20, 1951. Their articles of incorporation stated that they would run a machine shop. Haas and Storck were married to sisters Alice and Louise Castro respectively, making them brothers-in-law. Between 1951 and 1962, they received contracts from various companies for machining work. According to one of William Haas' sons, his father and uncle had no experience in manufacturing firearms or firearm components during this period.

Plainfield Machine Company produced M1 Carbines in different ranges. From 1962 to 1965, they marked their M1 Carbines' serial numbers with letter prefixes. When production reached serial number Z999, the serial numbers started over at 001 without the letter prefix, running numerically from 1965 to 1978.
