Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 70 rifle, of course, needs little introduction being the most widely known bolt action sporting rifle in the world. Since the Winchester Model 70 made its appearance in the late 1930’s, it has been the standard by which all other bolt action rifles are judged. Seldom will you find an article written on another make and model bolt-action rifle without reference to the Winchester Model 70.

The Winchester Pre ‘64 Model 70 is known colloquially as “The Rifleman’s Rifle.” Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of hunting with one of these rifles knows that they deserve their nickname. Some collectors prefer the Model 70’s manufactured prior to World War II with their fine finish and hand fitted parts even though they did not provide for conventional scope mounting. When production resumed following the World War II, bolt design changes and drilling and tapping the rear receiver bridge were performed on the rifles. Other collectors prefer those early post-war rifles because they retain pre-war quality but at the same time lend themselves to easy mounting of telescope sights.

This rifle is in excellent condition with minimal evidence of use, retaining a good bore and strong mechanics.
The .257 Roberts, also known as .257 Bob, is a medium-powered .25 caliber rifle cartridge. It has been described as the best compromise between the low recoil and flat trajectory of smaller calibers such as the 5 mm and 6 mm, and has more energy, but is harder recoiling, similar to larger hunting calibers, such as the 7 mm and 7.62 mm. Nominal bullet diameter of the .257 Roberts is .257 inches. The .257 Roberts uses the same caliber bullets as .250 Savage or the more powerful .25-06 Remington. Barrel rifling diameter, from which calibers derive their designations, is 0.250 in or 6.35 mm. The Pre-64 Winchesters have sincere collector interest, especially chambered in .257 Roberts such as this one. This is a truly spectacular example of this scarce and highly collectible model 70.
