Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 11-48 is a semi-automatic shotgun that represents a major leap in firearm design following World War II. Launched in 1949 to replace the Model 11, the 11-48 was produced until 1968 and came in a variety of gauges, including 12, 16, 20, 28, and .410. It operates using a long-recoil mechanism, similar to the Model 11, with the barrel and bolt recoiling together to eject spent shells and chamber new ones from a tubular magazine located under the barrel. A key innovation of the 11-48 was its use of stamped steel components, a cost-saving technology adapted from the German firearms industry and previously used in Remington’s military and civilian rifles. This approach allowed for interchangeable parts that did not require gunsmith fitting, making the shotgun both affordable and highly reliable. The Model 11-48 differed from the Model 11 in its streamlined machined steel receiver and the introduction of less expensive stamped steel internal parts. It also featured a removable aluminum trigger housing.

Mechanically, the 11-48 used two return springs: one in the buttstock for the bolt and another over the magazine tube for barrel recoil, allowing the barrel to move several inches into the receiver. The friction ring system, which adjusted for different loads, was improved from the Model 11’s brass ring to a self-adjusting design in later 11-48 models. In 1956, the gas-operated Model 58 was introduced but proved to be more expensive and less reliable. The Model 1100, released in 1963, combined the best features of both the Model 58 and the Model 11-48, leading to its eventual replacement. The Model 1100’s success overshadowed the 11-48, leading to its discontinuation.
