Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Since the early days of breech-loading service rifles, militaries around the world sought more cost-effective methods to train marksmen without depleting valuable service ammunition or tying up battle-ready rifles. Initial solutions included downloading standard cartridges or converting service rifles to fire .22 caliber rounds—both of which came with compromises in performance or practicality. By the time of World War I, a more effective solution emerged: purchasing commercially manufactured .22 rimfire rifles specifically for marksmanship training, while reserving standard-issue rifles for field use and drills. This strategy proved highly successful, with over 200 million rounds of .22 RF ammunition procured during the war for training purposes. It not only conserved critical supplies of .30 caliber ammunition but also allowed a greater number of full-power service rifles to be deployed to the front lines.

A continuation of this philosophy can be seen in the Remington 40-XB Rangemaster. These rifles were purpose-built by Remington’s Custom Shop to serve military and government training contracts, offering unmatched precision and durability in a dedicated .22 training platform. This particular rifle is marked with “U.S.” above the caliber and serial number, denoting its role in a government contract—though the specific markings can vary across contract runs. With its standard barrel, precision bolt action, and refined trigger, the 40-XB Rangemaster offered realistic marksmanship training without the cost or wear of firing full-power ammunition. Today, these rifles are prized not only for their historical significance but also for their exceptional accuracy and craftsmanship.
