Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington 870 emerged as a pivotal design in the lineage of Remington pump shotguns, following earlier models like the fragile Remington Model 10 by John Pedersen and the John Browning-designed Remington Model 17, which evolved into the Remington 31. Marketed as the "ball-bearing repeater," the Model 31 was well-regarded but costly to manufacture due to its many machined and hand-fitted parts, leading to lower sales compared to competitors like the Winchester Model 12. In response, Remington introduced the Model 870 in 1950, characterized by its modern and reliable construction, ease of disassembly and maintenance, and affordability. This strategy proved highly successful, with Remington selling two million Model 870 shotguns by 1973—ten times the number of Model 31s it replaced. By 1983, the Model 870 became the best-selling shotgun in history, with three million units sold. The introduction of the lower-cost "Express" models further bolstered sales, culminating in the production of the ten millionth Model 870 on April 13, 2009.
