Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this RARE variant of a true American icon for a penny-start auction; this is the Remington 870 Wingmaster Riot - Ohio National Guard Edition!

The Ohio National Guard ordered a special run of approximately 1,200 Remington 870 Wingmaster Riot shotguns (built beginning in 1971) configured with a 7+1 magazine-tube extension, a front barrel band fitted with an M7 bayonet lug, and a receiver laser-engraved with an outline of Ohio and the letters “O.N.G.” These guns were distributed to armories for infantry, engineer and Military Police use and saw documented service in notable state missions such as the 1993 Lucasville prison standoff and later hurricane response operations; many were subsequently transferred to the Ohio Department of Corrections or sold as surplus.

Of that production run, about 400 were factory-built with the distinctive top-folding metal stock (the remainder—roughly 800—were standard fixed-stock models), a feature that was completed at the Remington plant in 1972 after the fixed-stock guns were assembled. The combination of ONG markings, the rare folding-stock configuration (particularly with the bayonet lug), and the documented service history has made surviving examples especially collectible—folders command notable premiums on the secondary market while the ONG provenance gives both fixed and folding examples a lively appeal to collectors of military and state-issued shotguns.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington 870 Wingmaster Riot is a purpose-built, short-barreled variant of Remington’s venerable 870 pump-action shotgun, engineered to deliver compact handling, quick target acquisition, and steadfast reliability in close-quarters roles. Built on the same time-tested 870 receiver and slide-action geometry that has served shooters for decades, the Riot model pairs a shortened barrel and simplified sighting (typically a bead or ghost-ring) with rugged furniture and service-oriented finishes—design choices that favor fast presentation, easy manipulation, and straightforward maintenance. Chambered most commonly in 12 gauge, the platform offers a balance of stopping power and controllability suitable for defensive, law-enforcement, and security use; its simple manual of arms and durable construction make it intuitive to operate under stress and easy to service in the field.

Functionally, the Wingmaster Riot’s strengths are its proven cycling, consistent feeding with a variety of loads, and versatility for duty fit-outs: the short barrel and compact overall length make it ideal for vehicle, entry, and home-defense scenarios, while the model’s stout action handles heavy use with minimal fuss. Over the years, the Riot variant has been offered in a range of factory finishes and configurations—parkerized or blued metalwork, wood or synthetic stocks, and optional heat shields or specialty sighting—so agencies and private owners could tailor the shotgun to mission requirements. Collectors and shooters value the Wingmaster Riot both as a practical, service-capable firearm and as a representative example of the 870 family’s enduring legacy: a compact, no-nonsense shotgun that pairs classic pump-action dependability with the design choices needed for close-in work.
