Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington XP-100 is a landmark bolt-action pistol introduced in 1963 that reimagined handgun capability for long-range precision and varmint work. Built on a short-action rifle heritage and styled in a compact bullpup configuration, the XP-100 debuted chambered for the purpose-developed .221 Fireball — a shortened, efficient derivative of the .222 Remington that delivered rifle-like accuracy from a very short barrel. From the outset, the XP-100 was engineered for scope use and accuracy: its rigid action, free-floating barrel, and single-shot bolt design made it a natural for handgun silhouette and long-range small-game hunting, effectively creating the modern “handgun varmint” niche. Over its long production run (1963–1998), Remington expanded the XP-100 family with numerous variants and chamberings — including .223 Rem., .22-250, 7mm-08, .308, and even .35 Rem. in later models — and eventually produced a repeater XP-100R with a small internal magazine. The pistol’s precision pedigree, unusual styling, and direct link to the creation of the .221 Fireball have made well-preserved examples highly prized by shooters and collectors alike. Whether used as a practical long-range handgun, a competition silhouette tool, or a quirky milestone in firearms design, the XP-100 remains celebrated for its innovation, accuracy, and its singular place in post-war American small arms history.
