Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Hepburn No. 3 was a finely crafted single-shot, breech-loading rifle, renowned for its exceptional accuracy and elegant mechanical design. It earned a strong reputation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a premier target and match rifle, especially favored by competitive marksmen during the golden age of long-range precision shooting. Designed by Lewis L. Hepburn, the esteemed Superintendent of Remington’s mechanical department and a skilled marksman who was part of the famed Creedmoor International Shooting Team, the rifle was patented in 1879 and entered production in 1883. The Hepburn No. 3 stood out for its smooth and reliable dropping block action, which contributed to its outstanding performance and repeatable accuracy on the firing line.

It was manufactured by Remington Arms Company until approximately 1907, with production totals estimated between 8,000 and 10,000 units, making it a relatively rare piece and a highly prized item among collectors and antique firearms enthusiasts today. One of the defining features of the Hepburn was its versatility in caliber offerings. It was chambered in a wide variety of cartridges, catering to the preferences of both competitive shooters and hunters. Common chamberings included popular black powder target calibers such as .38-55 Winchester, .40-65, .45-70 Government, and .45-90 Sharps Straight. For long-range competition and Creedmoor-style matches, it was often found in powerful cartridges like .44-77 Sharps, .40-70 Straight, and .50-90 Sharps, among others. The rifle was also occasionally produced in smaller calibers, such as .32-40, for short- to mid-range target shooting, and in metric or European cartridges for international competitors. This broad range of available calibers made the Remington Hepburn adaptable to a spectrum of shooting disciplines—from mid-range offhand matches to 1,000-yard long-range prone events—as well as suitable for big game hunting in the American West. Its durability, fine craftsmanship, and mechanical precision have ensured its status as one of the classic single-shot rifles of the late 19th century.
