Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 95 is a type of double-barrel pocket pistol that is commonly known as a Derringer. Although it was produced for close to 70 years, the design remained largely unchanged throughout its lifespan, despite the manufacturer undergoing several financial reorganizations. As a result, there are repeating serial number sequences. The guns were available with various finishes, including plain blued or nickel-plated, and could be engraved. The grips were made of different materials, such as metal, walnut, rosewood, hard rubber, ivory, or pearl.
The Remington Double Derringer was produced between 1866 and 1935. The initial production did not have extractors before 1869. The first 100 Double Derringers had "Manufactured by E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y." stamped on the right side of the barrel, while "ELLIOT'S PATENT DEC. 12, 1865" was stamped on the left side of the barrel. This refers to the U.S. Patent 51,440, "Improvement in Many-Barreled Fire-Arms" by firearms inventor William H. Elliot, which details the primary features of the original design. After the first 100, the "Manufactured by" marking was no longer stamped between the barrels. Some DDs have the marking "Remington's Ilion NY USA" without any known reason. At around serial 1600, an extractor was installed on the left side between the barrels. After serial 2400, the marking was placed on the top of the barrels in two lines: "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y.; ELLIOT'S PATENT DEC. 12th 1865." This is called the "Two Line" and is the Second Model. In 1888, the barrel rib top inscription was changed to "REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION N.Y.," which is the Third Model. In 1911, the marking was again changed to "REMINGTON ARMS - U.M.C. CO. ILION, N.Y." In 1921, Remington adopted a numbering system for every model, and the Double Derringer became the Model 95 at this time.
Remington produced over 150,000 over-under double-barreled derringers between 1866 and 1935, exclusively in .41 Short rimfire. The gun has four models with several variations. The first model, the first variation, is one of the rarest, with only the first 100 produced marked "MANUFACTURED BY E. REMINGTON & SONS" on one side rib and "ELLIOTS PATENT DEC 12 1865" on the other side rib. The second variation is the same but without the "manufactured by" marking. The third variation, known as the "extractor cut," has an extractor on the left side. The fourth variation is highly uncommon and marked "REMINGTONS ILLION NY."
