Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Arms Company Model 51 is one of the most distinctive early 20th-century American semi-automatic pistols, designed by the brilliant firearms engineer John Pedersen. Introduced in 1918 and produced into the mid-1920s, the Model 51 was chambered in both .32 ACP and .380 ACP, with the latter being the more common and better-suited option for its design. What set the Model 51 apart from other contemporary semi-automatics was its innovative “hesitation lock” action, which was neither a simple blowback nor a conventional locked-breech design. Instead, it delayed the breech opening long enough to handle higher pressures safely, resulting in a pistol that was remarkably slim, lightweight, and soft-shooting compared to competitors like the Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless. The ergonomics were ahead of their time, featuring a low bore axis, natural pointability, and a grip shape that contributed to excellent control and comfort in the hand. Although praised for its elegant design and smooth handling, the Model 51 was not a commercial success in its day, with fewer than 65,000 produced between 1918 and 1926. Its higher production costs, combined with consumer preference for more established pistols like Colt’s offerings, limited its reach in the competitive civilian handgun market. Nevertheless, the Remington 51 developed a reputation among firearms historians and collectors as a highly advanced design that influenced later developments, including Remington’s short-lived R51 revival in the 2010s. Today, surviving examples of the original Model 51 are sought after for their combination of rarity, engineering pedigree, and unique handling qualities. They occupy a special niche as a firearm decades ahead of its time, representing both Pedersen’s genius and Remington’s attempt to carve out a place in the semi-automatic handgun market during an era dominated by Colt and European manufacturers.
