Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Rheinische Metallwaaren & Maschinenfabrik (RM&M), later Rheinmetall, was founded in 1889 and initially focused on field artillery. In 1901, it acquired the struggling Waffenfabrik von Dreyse, shifting its small arms production to pistols and machine guns under the Dreyse name. The 1907 Dreyse, patented in 1908, is a striker-fired, unlocked-breech pistol chambered for the 7.65mm Browning (.32 ACP). While influenced by the Browning 1900, the Dreyse features a concentric recoil spring instead of one above the barrel. Both guns share similarities in design, such as the grip angle, magazine release, and breech block movement during recoil. However, the Dreyse offers simpler disassembly, requiring no screwdriver, though it does need a tool to compress the recoil spring bushing. The 1907 Dreyse does not have a full-length slide like the Browning.

The slide extends about three-quarters of the way down the top of the gun, and the breech block depends from it. The slide and breech block reciprocate in the upper receiver housing. Because the rear portion of the upper receiver housing is fixed and does not reciprocate, the slide must be grasped at the front in order to chamber a round. The forward portion of the slide has serrations for this purpose. The barrel is fixed in the upper receiver housing and sits beneath the slide. The recoil spring is held in place around the barrel by a collar-like bushing at the front of the housing.

A T-shaped extension on top of the bushing fits into a recess in the bottom of the slide so that the bushing compresses the recoil spring as the slide moves to the rear (early pistols had a hook on the slide rather than on the bushing). The lockwork is simple, with a transfer bar linking the trigger to the sear. A manual safety blocks the sear when engaged, and wartime models featured a modified sear to handle harder primers. German police were known to have used the 1907 Dreyse well into the 1930s. According to E. Brunnth in his article in the February 1971 Deutches Waffenjournal, production ended at the end of World War I.
