Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Garrucha is a compact, side-by-side double-barreled pistol that found widespread popularity in Brazil and Argentina during the early to mid-20th century, particularly from the 1930s to the 1960s. Resembling a derringer in both form and function, the Garrucha typically featured two barrels arranged side-by-side, unlike the more common over-and-under derringer configuration. While single-shot variants did exist, the double-barrel model was more prevalent, offering greater versatility in a small, easily concealable package. These pistols were especially favored by South American gauchos (cowboys) of the Pampas region due to their affordability, compact design, and sufficient stopping power for self-defense or dispatching small game. The most commonly used calibers in Brazil were .320 and .380 centerfire cartridges—conical in shape and similar to .32 and .38 S&W rounds—as well as various rimfire options like .22 Short, .22 Long, .22 LR, and Flobert cartridges.

Among the notable Garrucha manufacturers in Brazil were Castelo, Rossi, and Lerap, with Rossi's version being particularly recognizable and even imported into the U.S. by Firearms International Corp. The Rossi Garrucha in .22 Long Rifle stood out for its utilitarian design and approachable features. It came with 2 ¾" side-by-side barrels, a double-trigger mechanism, and a hammer-fired action. The firearm was typically finished with either nickel or chrome-plated frames, blued barrels, and smooth black composite grips, offering a modest yet functional aesthetic. A fixed front brass bead sight provided basic aiming assistance. Though often classified as a double-barreled pistol, many Garruchas like the Rossi were effectively single-shot, as only one barrel would be fired at a time. Their simplicity and chambering in low-recoil .22 LR made them useful for small game hunting, casual target shooting (plinking), and even introducing new shooters to firearms. Despite their limited power and range, the Garrucha remains an iconic example of practical firearm design tailored to local needs and conditions in South America.
