Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Rossi "Squire" is Rossi’s mid- to late-20th-century take on the classic side-by-side double-barrel shotgun: a hammerless, break-action field gun built to deliver straightforward function and value for hunters and working shooters. Manufactured and imported primarily during the 1980s (commonly cited production runs center on the mid-1980s through about 1990), the Squire was offered in common sporting gauges—12, 20, and .410—and in practical barrel lengths (commonly 20", 26", or 28") to match a variety of hunting tasks. Typical features include a solid matted or ventilated rib, single bead front sight, a tang safety, double triggers for immediate second-barrel selection, a beavertail forearm for positive handling, and a plain hardwood stock finished to suit field use. Chambers were commonly specified for 2½" or 3" shells depending on the variant and importer, and the overall package emphasized rugged simplicity rather than luxurious appointments, making it an economical alternative to higher-end European side-by-sides while retaining the classic break-open silhouette and manual of arms that many shooters prefer. Functionally, the Squire performs as a dependable, no-frills hunting gun that is easy to maintain and forgiving in real-world use. The break-action layout provides excellent reliability—fouling and extraction problems are rare when the barrels and forcing cones are clean—and the double-trigger arrangement gives immediate second-barrel capability without the added complexity of selective trigger linkages. In practical field use, shorter 20" or 26" tubes make the Squire nimble in thick cover and upland work, while the 28" versions smooth shot pattern and follow-through for longer waterfowl or skeet-style presentation. Tradeoffs are predictable: finish and checkering are generally modest, barreled and rib fitment can vary between import batches, and the Squire’s value proposition places it below collectible or high-grade doubles—yet for shooters wanting an honest working side-by-side, the Squire’s combination of simple mechanics, readily serviced hardware, and historically accurate handling make it a sensible, durable choice for woods work, farm use, or cowboy/costume shooting.
