Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger No. 1 is a single-shot rifle with a Farquharson-style hammerless falling-block action, introduced and manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. since 1967. An underlever lowers the breechblock to allow ammunition loading and also cocks the rifle. Lenard Brownell, commenting on his work at Ruger, said of the No. 1: "There was never any question about the strength of the action. In testing it, I remember how much trouble I had trying to tear it up. I never did manage to blow one apart."
The .375 2-1/2" Nitro Express is a hunting cartridge that was used in a variety of rifles, including Lee bolt action BSA magazine rifles and single-shot and double-barreled rifles. The cartridge is slightly longer than the .303 British and has a .375 caliber bullet. The case is based on a flanged (British for rimmed), straight taper case and is 2.50" long with a rim diameter of .523" and a head diameter of .456". The neck diameter tapers to .397" and Berdan .217" primers were used.

It is important not to confuse the .375 Flanged Nitro Express with the much longer and more powerful .375 Flanged Magnum, which is a suitable cartridge for hunting dangerous game in Africa. The .375 Flanged Nitro Express, on the other hand, is not recommended for this purpose, but it is a great low-velocity medium-bore cartridge for hunting woods and plains game. In fact, it offers better performance than the .45-70 cartridge.
