Item Description
Bryant Ridge Auction Company is pleased to present this RARE semi-auto pistol today for a penny-start auction; this is the Russian Makarov!
During the deadliest and most violent war in human history, millions of guns were produced. Guns like the highly regarded M1 Garand and M1911 became surplus weapons, which were then distributed through the Civilian Marksmanship program. Some guns, such as the Garand and M1 Carbine, were sold at local sporting goods and gun stores for hunting. However, some guns became trophies in the homes of the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who fought in the war. These guns were carried home in a duffle bag or foot locker, known as "the bring back gun."
The owner described this item as a "Vietnam Bring Back Gun," indicating that it was likely brought back from Vietnam. Interestingly, it has no discernible markings on it.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Makarov pistol, also known as the PM, is a semi-automatic pistol that originated in the Soviet Union. It was adopted as the standard military and police sidearm in 1951 under Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov's leadership. The PM is a medium-sized, all-steel handgun with a straight-blowback action and a frame-fixed barrel. Unlike locked-breech pistols, the PM's slide is held closed by the recoil spring, making it a simple and accurate blowback design. It uses a 9×18mm cartridge, which provides a good balance of energy for its moderate weight and size.

Due to its blowback operation, the PM is heavier than modern US commercial handguns. The heavy slide delays the opening of the breech until internal pressures have fallen to a safe level. Despite being heavy, the Makarov pistol is widely regarded as well-balanced in its design elements. The Makarov pistol was manufactured in several communist countries during and after the Cold War, including East Germany, Bulgaria, China, and post-reunification Germany. Even after the dissolution of the USSR, these countries continued to produce the Makarov, and Germany ended up with thousands of ex-East German Makarov pistols.
