Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this classic lever-action rifle today for a penny-start auction; this is the Savage 99EG Post-War!

The Savage Model 99-EG is a classic lever-action rifle known for its innovative rotary magazine and sleek, hammerless design—features that set it apart from other rifles of its era. This particular example is especially desirable, as it has not been drilled or tapped for scope mounts, preserving its original condition and appeal to collectors. With its checkered pistol-grip stock, Schnabel forend, and 24" barrel, the 99-EG represents a fine blend of form, function, and craftsmanship from one of America’s most iconic rifle lines.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Model 99, evolved from the groundbreaking Model 1895 and 1899 designs, holds a prominent place in American firearms history as one of the first hammerless lever-action rifles. The hammerless design offered significant advantages, including faster lock time, increased accuracy, and a reduced chance of snagging in brush or clothing. One of the most innovative features of the 1899/99 series was its rotary magazine, which used a spring-loaded spool with grooves to securely hold cartridges—allowing the safe use of spitzer (pointed) bullets, unlike traditional tubular magazines. This gave Savage a technological edge, enabling their rifles to chamber high-velocity smokeless powder cartridges with flatter trajectories, making them highly desirable for both hunters and shooters of the era.

This particular example is a Model 99 EG, a solid frame variant featuring a checkered pistol-grip walnut stock and a classic Schnabel-tipped forend. It’s fitted with a 24" barrel, brass-beaded blade front sight, and elevator-adjustable rear, enhancing accuracy and maintaining the rifle’s vintage aesthetic. Mechanically sound and boasting a strong bore, this rifle is in excellent condition for a firearm over seven decades old. Whether you're a seasoned Savage 99 collector or a hunter in search of a rugged and reliable deer rifle, this Model 99 EG is a rare and appealing find—steeped in innovation and ready for the field.
