Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The plain rifle was invented in America out of necessity during the time when trappers, explorers, soldiers, and pioneers were settling the land and pushing the boundary of the country all the way to the Pacific shore. It became a vital tool for survival during the 18th and 19th centuries and needed to be accessible to everyone who required it. This is why it was designed to be plain and simple.
One of the simplest rifles ever made is the Savage Model 340. It was introduced in 1950, a few years after the action was first used in a rifle carrying the Stevens name. Initially, it was available in .30-30 Winchester and .22 Hornet calibers, both of which were quite popular. Later, the .222 Remington and .223 Remington were added to the available chamberings, with a few being made in .225 Winchester as well. However, the .30-30 Winchester remained the only caliber suitable for medium-sized game. The Savage Model 340 was discontinued in 1985, and all the available models were taken off the market.
