Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Savage Arms is an American gunmaker based in Westfield, Massachusetts, with operations in Canada. Savage makes a variety of rimfire and centerfire rifles, as well as Stevens single-shot rifles and shotguns. The company is best known for the Model 99 lever-action rifle, no longer in production, and the .300 Savage. Savage was a subsidiary of Vista Outdoor until 2019 when it was spun off.
Apr. 20, 1915, refers to the patent date of Patent No. 1,136,247 granted to G.S. Lewis and assigned to the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. of Chicopee Falls, Mass. This patent covers a hammerless double with coil-spring driven strikers, rather than internal hammers rotating about an axle. From the time of the patent until WW-II this action was used on a number of different Stevens, Riverside and Springfield doubles as well as many marked with a variety of "trade names." The plants of the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. were taken over by New England Westinghouse for wartime production during WW-I, and they began using the name J. Stevens Arms Co. After The Great War they were sold off to Savage Arms Corp., and continued to operate as J. Stevens Arms Co. J. Stevens Arms Co. continued to make this gun during the 1920s as the Riverside No. 315. The same action was also introduced by 1923 as the Stevens No. 330 with a capped pistol grip walnut stock, while the Riverside had a half-pistol grip walnut stock. By 1925, the 20-gauge and .410-bore were added to the No. 315 and No. 330. By 1929 they dropped the Riverside name and the gun was the Springfield No. 315. For 1931 they introduced the Springfield No. 311 which was a similar gun but with an uncheckered "walnut finish" stock. These guns remained in the line up to 1936, when the No. 330 was replaced with the No. 530 and the No. 315 was replaced with the No. 515. The No. 311 with the old G.S. Lewis action remained until WW-II, as well as many "trade branded" versions. There were many of these guns made in myriad "trade brands" including the RANGER for Sear, Roebuck & Co.
Springfield is a name used by the Stevens Arms & Tool Company on their less expensive shotguns. The guns are mechanically identical to the more expensive shotguns but are less well finished and have hardwood stocks like birch or beech wood finished to look look like walnut.
Return Policy:
We gladly offer a 3 day unfired inspection policy from the time that the firearm is delivered to your FFL. Refunds are available for all qualifying orders.
