Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Arms Corporation Model 420 was introduced in the late 1930s as an affordable yet well-crafted American-made over-and-under shotgun, produced during a period when such designs were still relatively uncommon in the domestic market. Built with a solid steel frame and robust locking mechanism, the Model 420 was chambered primarily in 12 and 16 gauge and was offered with barrel lengths typically in the 26" to 28" range, featuring a ventilated or solid rib depending on configuration. The gun’s styling reflected both functional simplicity and a hint of elegance, with walnut stocks and fore-ends often showing modest checkering for improved grip. Mechanically, the 420 used a simple extractor system rather than ejectors, in keeping with its practical, cost-conscious design. This made it appealing to hunters and sportsmen who wanted the benefits of an over-and-under—better sighting plane, balance, and handling—without the expense of imported European doubles. From a performance standpoint, the Savage Model 420 was designed to handle the rigors of the field, making it a reliable choice for upland bird hunting, small game, and recreational clay shooting. Its weight and balance contributed to steady swinging and reduced felt recoil, while the fixed choke options available at the time allowed buyers to select configurations tailored to their hunting needs. The Model 420 shared its design heritage with the closely related Model 430, but distinguished itself by its simpler finish and extractor-only function. While production was relatively short-lived—interrupted by World War II and never fully revived afterward—the 420 remains an interesting example of Savage’s effort to produce an accessible American over-and-under in an era dominated by side-by-sides. Today, these shotguns are appreciated by collectors and shooters who recognize their historical significance, solid construction, and the role they played in introducing many U.S. sportsmen to the over-and-under platform.
