The Savage Model 1903 is a .22-caliber slide-action (pump) rifle known for its detachable box magazine and takedown construction. It was manufactured from 1903 until about 1916, with a limited additional run in 1922. The magazine is typically a five-round box, released via a lever inside the trigger guard. The rifle’s action features a single slide bar on the right side, connecting the pump handle to the breechblock, and its extractor-ejector mechanism ejects spent cartridges through a right-side port. It safely chambers .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle cartridges. The takedown design allows the receiver, barrel, and bolt assembly to be separated from the stock using a screw on the right side. Standard models were equipped with a 24-inch octagonal barrel, a walnut half-pistol grip stock with a crescent buttplate, and a grooved wooden forend. A two-position safety is mounted on the upper tang. Higher-grade “gallery” versions offered by Savage featured engraved receivers, micrometer rear sights, and, on some models, a mechanical round counter under the forend.
