Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this bolt-action rifle today for a penny-start auction; this is the Savage Enfield No. 4 MK I/3!

The rifle started life as a No. 4 Mk. 1* made by Savage during WWII. It has a Savage “S” marking and a “U.S. PROPERTY” mark on the receiver. The rifle was made as part of the “Lend-Lease” program, and it eventually saw use in England. In 1951, the rifle was upgraded during a Factory Thorough Repair (FTR) at Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF) Fazakerley. It was later imported back into the U.S. for sales to the Civilian market.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Enfield No. 4 Mk I/3 is a historically significant bolt-action rifle chambered in .303 British, carrying with it the legacy of World War II and postwar service. Originally manufactured by Savage in the United States as a No. 4 Mk I* variant, it bears both the Savage “S” marking and the “U.S. PROPERTY” stamp, signifying its role in the Lend-Lease program. With its 25-inch barrel, winged blade front sight, and adjustable rear sight, the rifle reflects the rugged functionality expected of British service rifles during the war. Its smooth wooden stock and black finish further emphasize its straightforward, military-issued character.

After serving overseas, this rifle underwent a Factory Thorough Repair (FTR) at the Royal Ordnance Factory in Fazakerley in 1951, where it was updated and refinished to meet postwar standards. This process gave it the designation Mk I/3, signifying its upgrade from its wartime configuration. Eventually, the rifle returned to the United States, entering the civilian market as a tangible artifact of its international service history. The combination of American manufacture, British wartime use, and postwar refurbishment makes this Savage Enfield an intriguing collectible that embodies the shared military efforts of World War II and the transitional years that followed.
