Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Model 24, introduced in 1939 and produced in numerous configurations for over half a century, is one of the most versatile and recognizable American combination guns ever made, pairing a rifle barrel over a shotgun barrel in a simple, rugged break-action design that appealed to hunters, trappers, farmers, and outdoorsmen who needed one firearm capable of handling a wide spectrum of tasks. Unlike the earlier 22-410, the Model 24 eventually expanded into a wide array of chamberings, with the upper rifle barrel offered not only in .22 LR, .22 WMR, and .222 Remington, but also centerfire options like .223 Remington and .30-30 Winchester, while the lower barrel was typically 20-gauge or 12-gauge, giving the gun remarkable adaptability—from potting squirrels at distance to dropping upland birds or dealing with larger varmints and predators. The selector system varied by series: early models used a hammer-mounted switch, while later guns incorporated a crossbolt or tang selector, but all retained the straightforward operation and single-trigger simplicity that defined the 24. Its receivers, often case-colored on early versions and later finished in utilitarian black or matte bluing, were built strong enough to handle higher-pressure rifle rounds, and the barrels were secured by a robust hinge and locking lug that allowed these guns to withstand decades of use.

The walnut stocks ranged from plain and workmanlike to handsomely checkered on Deluxe variants, with the gun’s tall sight line—necessary to accommodate the stacked barrels—giving it a distinct profile. Despite its somewhat blocky appearance, the Model 24 balanced surprisingly well, especially in the lighter rimfire/20-gauge configurations that became a favorite among backpackers and trappers for their ability to take nearly any type of game encountered in the field. Over the years it developed a cult following, with each variant—24B, 24C Camper's Companion, 24V Series, and the later 24F—representing small evolutions in design and capability. Today, the Savage 24 is celebrated as a practical, ingenious tool from an era when versatility mattered deeply, and it continues to be prized by collectors and woodsmen who appreciate its unique ability to serve as both rifle and shotgun in a single, dependable package.
