The Savage Model 72 is a distinctive and relatively uncommon single-shot, falling-block .22 rimfire rifle that showcases an unusual but elegant approach to small-bore rifle design during the mid-20th century. Produced by Savage Arms, the Model 72 departs from the bolt-action and semi-automatic rimfires that dominated Savage’s catalog by employing a true falling-block action, in which a vertically sliding breechblock drops down to expose the chamber when the operating lever is lowered, allowing a single cartridge to be inserted by hand. Typically chambered in .22 Long Rifle (and often capable of firing .22 Short and .22 Long), the rifle was intended for deliberate, accurate shooting rather than rapid fire, making it well suited for marksmanship training, small-game hunting, and recreational target work.
